The account
Description
18 cm. Upperparts dark brown with chestnut rump. Throat white, the feathers tipped brown giving a scaled appearance. Breast chestnut-brown. Abdomen slightly duller dark brown. Tail blackish.
The juvenile plumage is darker.

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice
Song a loud trill 'chi chi chi chi chi chi chi chi chi chi che che', about 4 seconds long. Calls of similar but shorter sequences.
Behavior
Solitary and terrestrial in dense forest. Hops around in leaf litter and throws leaves around probing into humid soil. Only rarely flies to a low branch or the base of a tree when alarmed (Vaurie).
Breeding
The nest is at the end of a burrow in an earth bank (54).
Habitat and status
Relatively regularly observed on the ground or close to the ground of denser humid secondary and primary rainforest.
Distribution
Throughout, such as in the Serra dos Orgãos, the Serra do Mar (Serra Bocaina, Boraceia (44), Serra da Cantareira). South of São Paulo near PE Jacupiranga, Fazenda Intervales. Pinto reports of specimens collected in São Paulo state at Iguape, Ubatuba, Ypiranga, Ilha São Sebastião, Serra da Cantareira and also further inland, e. g., at Franca (40). Up to 1500 meters.
Taxonomy notes
The species of the genus Sclerurus are almost completely terrestrial with the habit of turning around dead leaves vigorously. Thus, the English name "leaf tosser" is more appropriate (55).
