6.7 Bill, with straight culmen and rounded lower mandible creates the impression of being upturned. It is bluish yellow with black on the culmen. Above dark brown with an umber-brown crown and a distinct white eyering and prominent white superciliary stripe. Rump and tail reddish rufous. A white throat which continues into a very characteristic white nuchal band. Chest and belly pale ochraceous, darkest on the crissum. Variations on series of very characteristic, loud, fast and rhythmical "kek kek kek kek....." sounds: gives sometimes the impression of being a series of double calls "kekek kekek kekek kekek kekek......": also a series of nasal "ziu ziu ziu ziu..." notes. Foraging mostly in pairs and climbing about. Also upside down, in dense foliage and along trunks inspecting dead leaf clumps and epiphytes or hammering into rotten wood and bamboo. Quite confiding at times. Nests in tree cavities ^30 . Regularly heard, rather than seen in dense humid primary or secondary forest and forest borders. Seems to be fond of bamboo stands within forest, but is not confined to bamboo. Throughout, though less common in the southern part of Estado do S<C4>o Paulo south of <8E>Fazenda Intervales<8E>.
