The account
Description
7.5" Forecrown chestnut otherwise pale ochraceous-buff brown above with heavy dark streaks on the remainder of the crown and back. Lores whitish and superciliary buff. Cheeks tawny. Wing feathers dark brown with buff margins, the rims of the primaries chestnut. Below pale ochraceous. Throat white, bordered by a necklace of black spots that are sometimes difficult to see. Abdomen pinkish buff. Tail blackish brown with spiny, buffy white tips, clearly visible when flying.
Juvenile plumage has no chestnut on crown, darker more ochraceous underparts and an indistinct necklace.

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice
Song sequences of 'tik tik tirrrr-tik tik tirrrr' or 'tik tik tik tirrrrrr' intermixed with a higher 'ti tititititititititi', often in a duet.
Behavior
On or near the ground, running around usually within vegetation. Sometimes singing from top of small tree, etc.
Breeding
The large nests placed in a fork of a small tree and consist of large and frequently thorny sticks having a side entrance that reaches the nest cavity from above.
Habitat and status
Uncommon in open savannah country, pastures, open woodland. Was found nesting in 1953 near Campo Belo, Rio de Janeiro, in the Paraiba valley (53). Seems to invade the coastal areas as a consequence of forest destruction (1992 Ubatuba).
Distribution
Throughout, to about 1000 meters.
