The account
Description
5.5" Stocky with a short tail. Forehead and nape band pale ochraceous-brown with the rest of crown sooty black. Superciliary buff colored. Upper back black, the feathers with white shaft streaks. Lower back and rump pale ochraceous-brown. Below white, turning pale buff on the chest and belly. Flanks brownish. Crissum ochraceous. The wings are black with white inner rims to the secondaries and tertiaries with a rufous band across the base of remiges and on the coverts. Tail blackish, tipped buff.
The immature plumage is much less sharply patterned with rufous shaft streaks on the crown and darker underneath (41).

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

The oval nest with a side entrance is fastened to several reed stalks (30).

Of doubtful occurrence in our area. There are single records from Iguape from before 1858 (40 p. 403) and Rio de Janeiro(44).
