5.5 Stocky with a short tail. Forehead and nape band pale ochraceous-brown with the rest of crown sooty black. Superciliary buff colored. Upper back black, the feathers with white shaft streaks. Lower back and rump pale ochraceous-brown. Below white, turning pale buff on the chest and belly. Flanks brownish. Crissum ochraceous. The wings are black with white inner rims to the secondaries and tertiaries with a rufous band across the base of remiges and on the coverts. Tail blackish, tipped buff. <NThe immature plumage is much less sharply patterned with rufous shaft streaks on the crown and darker underneath ^41 . A series of "tak-tak" sounds, sometimes squeaky. Also a fast series of "tik..tik..tik..tik..tik.." as if two pebbles are hit together cut 2 Climbing around in reed beds, sometimes on the ground on mud and in floating vegetation. The oval nest with a side entrance is fastened to several reed stalks ^30 . Reedbeds. Of doubtful occurrence in our area.
