16 cm. Brown above, darker and heavily streaked with russet on the crown. Buff superciliary stripe. Lighter streaks on the back. A rufous-brown area in the wing. Tail brown, the outer feathers russet. Below buff, the throat whitish with dark brown spots on the throat and chest. Song a high pitched "zizizizizizi" with even pitch, ending abruptly. Forages like a chickadee in trees and bushes. Has no special affinity to Araucarias. Apparently fairly common, in forest, scrub, gardens, lowlands. Recorded from Curitiba, Parana which is only about 100 km from the border of Estado S<C4>o Paulo ^40 .
