17 cm: Above light rufous with dark gray crown and rusty front, gray eye stripe, white superciliary and dark gray cheeks. primaries black with two rusty bands across. Tail rufous, feathers with black outer tips. below light buffy olive, throat whitish, legs grayish-brown. Call a series of staccato notes consisting of single tuk...tuk... syllables which have a lower pitch than the calls of other Horneros. Song is a series of notes which become slower and lower in pitch. Also a loud cry like kweeh ^30 . A species of bushy, open areas, such as farm land, apparently mostly close to water, quite confident, less noisy than /Furnarius rufus . Listed as a scarce resident for the Serra dos Org<C4>os area ^15 . Listed as rare for the Reserva Ecol<D4>gica de Guapiac<DB> near Cachoeira de Macacu, Estado Rio de Janeiro. Might expand into Northern Estado Rio de Janeiro and has possibly benefited from deforestation. Mostly extralimital, Minas Gerais and Espiritu Santo.
