12.5 cm. Buff brown above, shitish-buff below. Light buff superciliary. Throat white. Chest with fine brown flammulation on white. Two rufous bands across the primaries. The secondaries are mistly rufous, as are the underwing coverts. Tail short and rufous with an extensive subterminal band black and with mostly dusky central tail feathers. Tail tips whitish buff. <N Juvenile plumage with less distinct flammulation on chest, the terminal buff band of tail is less obvious and with lighter spots on back.
Song is a repeated "zliip" ^44 .
Running and foraging on the ground. Rarely perches on scrubs or low bushes.
Rare in grassy campo, mostly away from trees and taller bushes. According to Ridgely and Tudor ^44 likes freshly burned areas.
Largely extralimital. The interior of south-central Brazil. Might be found locally closer to the coast in suitable habitat. Recorded in 1931 from Itapetininga, Estado S<C4>o Paulo ^49 . 500 - 1200 meter ^44 .
