Crimson-crested Woodpecker

33-38 cm. Male has the crest, top and sides of head crimson, the area around bill and front part of the moustachial area pale creamy buff. Narrow line across the lower forehead black. Black and white spot on the ear coverts. Throat black. Neck, upper breast and upperparts black with white stripes down the neck and side of mantle meeting in the center of the back. The wings and wing coverts black, the primaries with small white tips and with a small area of white at bases of inner webs. Tail black. Lower breast to crissum pale buffy white barred blackish-brown. Underwings white, with a black stripe along the trailing edge. <NThe female has less red on the head. A nasal "kwirrah" Vocalization 1 ,"wukwuk","kidada" vocalization 2 and 3 ,drumming a single short blow followed by a short roll "da-drrrr" vocalization 2 . In pairs or small groups foraging from 5-25 meters height in tall living and dead trees. Excavates rotten stumps. September-November. Not uncommon in a variety of forest habitats including primary and secondary humid forest and forest edge, open woodland and parks, goes into savannah woodland and open areas with single large trees.
