The account

Description

32-37 cm. Male has the entire head, small crest, and neck to uppermost breast bright red; a black and white spot on the lower rear of the ear coverts; Upperparts whitish, tinged pale buff. Wings and wing coverts black with small rusty spots on the inner webs of the flight feathers. Tail black. Underparts buff, barred black. Underwing blackish brown with rufous buff coverts and spots on the flight feathers.

The female lacks the oval ear covert spot and has a white moustachial stripe bordered with black above and a blackish chin.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

A nasal 'kew" (vocalizations # 4 and 5), possibly a descending fast 'kekekekekeke' belongs to this species (vocalization # 2). Drumming is a double tap 'plopop' (vocalization #1 and 3).

Behavior

Forages alone or in pairs at all levels of larger dead and living trees.

Breeding

September-October.

Habitat and status

Uncommon in humid forest, araucaria forest with large trees.
