25-30 cm. Head with a long crest. The male has a broad red malar stripe and cheek band. Chin and neck light yellow. Belly black. Mantle, scapulars and wings black, barred white. Black tail feathers narrowly barred white.<NThe female lacks the red malar stripe Common call a "twee twee" vocalization 4 , two syllablic: also a flute-like "tue tue tue" vocalization 5 , a "krrrrr" sound vocalization 1 and various "tk tk tk" sounds vocalization 2 . Occurs in pairs or small family groups, forages in canopy of trees on branches gleaning and pecking under bark. In Brazil April-June: in Argentina October- December ^129 .
