27-30 cm. Male has a black forehead and forecrown, red hindcrown and nape. Lores, superciliary area, cheeks and ear coverts white, the ear coverts with an olive tinge. Red moustachial stripe. Throat light-green, striped black. Hindneck and upperparts yellowish green, barred dark brown. Upper tail coverts buff. Tail black, the outer feathers barred yellow. Neck, sides and underparts pale green with black spots which become smaller and paler on the belly. Underwing yellowish white. Undertail black, barred yellow. <NThe female has a black malar stripe. Most common call a repeated "wheeo wheeo wheeo. . . ." vocalizations 1-3 , a "kwik kwik kwik kwik . . ", "ca wik ca wik . . " and similar calls recalling vocalizations of the Northern Flicker. Occurs mostly singly. Arboreal and terrestrial leaps in long hops , but needs trees and forages in the mid and higher level of trees probing and gleaning. Sometimes leaps like a jay through the crown of a tree. Starting in August-September. Nest in a dead tree.
