White-spotted Woodpecker

16-19.5 cm. Male has a buff forehead and a blackish crown with red streaks. Neck olive. Ear coverts brown-olive. Superciliary and moustachial stripe white. Whitish chin and neck striped olive. Above olive-brown, the feathers edged light buffy forming bars on the wings. Dark olive wing coverts with white tips. Primaries and secondaries brown, barred whitish. Tail olive-brown barred whitish. Dark olive underparts heavily streaked with whitish buff. Bill blackish gray. <NThe female lacks the white streaks on the crown. A sharp "cheekit" and variations thereof are diagnostic vocalization 3 . Also a "trrr-trr-trr-trr-trr" Vocalization 1 . Forages alone or in pairs at all heights in trees, fence posts, brush.
