14-15 cm. Male has a variable amount of red on the crown and indistinct red streaks on the mantle. Forehead grayish green. Olive-green above. Barred olive and whitish below. Wings and outer tail feathers olive-green with whitish barring. Thin white mustachial streak. <NThe female is without red on head. A high pitched "kikikikikikiki", increasing in pitch. Also a wik-wik-wik" ^128 . Forages alone, in pairs or in mixed flocks from low in trees, scrub, bamboo, to high in the canopy. October-March. Not uncommon in wood lots, forest border, gallery forest.
