Checkered Woodpecker

14 cm. Long straight bill. <NThe male has a forehead and a blackish-brown crown, streaked white. The sides of the nape red or orange red. Ear coverts dark brown. Lower lores and supercilium white streaked brown. Hindneck and upper parts blackish brown, barred whitish. Wings deep brown, barred white. Underparts white, tinged pale yellow or buff with dark brown streaks especially on breast and flanks. Crissum white with brown streaks. Black tail barred white. <NThe female is without red on head. Call like "ti tiwetwetwetwetwet", also has a /Downy Woodpecker -like "tititititititi". Forages in pairs low in trees and bushes: hammers on twigs, but usually probes and gleans. September-November. Rare in dry open woodland, savannahs and bush country. Extralimital. Occurs inland in Estado S<C4>o Paulo and Minas Gerais. Might appear closer to the coast at times.
