9-10 cm. Lower forehead and lores white, upper forehead and forecrown black: in the male the feathers are tipped red. Hindcrown and nape black, finely spotted white. Cheeks and ear coverts dark buffy brown, finely spotted white. White line behind eye. Neck sides and hindneck cinnamon-buff. Throat, chin and moustachial area buffy-white, the feathers tipped black. Upperparts ochre brown. Upper wing coverts brown, edged buff. Flight feathers dark brown, narrowly edged buff. Upper tail black, the central feather pair with a white stripe along the inner webs, the outer tail feather pair with a diagonal white stripe. Underparts whitish, becoming strongly buff on the flanks and lower belly, boldly barred black. <NFemale lacks red on the head. Call a high pitched "tirrrrrr". Forages at low levels of trees, prefers twigs and branches. Nest in hole of tree. October-March. Common in scrubby areas, gallery forest, open parkland, borders of humid forest.
