The account

Description

9-10 cm. Lower forehead and lores white, upper forehead and forecrown black; in the male the feathers are tipped red. Hindcrown and nape black, finely spotted white. Cheeks and ear coverts dark buffy brown, finely spotted white. White line behind eye. Neck sides and hindneck cinnamon-buff. Throat, chin and moustachial area buffy-white, the feathers tipped black. Upperparts ochre brown. Upper wing coverts brown, edged buff. Flight feathers dark brown, narrowly edged buff. Upper tail black, the central feather pair with a white stripe along the inner webs, the outer tail feather pair with a diagonal white stripe. Underparts whitish, becoming strongly buff on the flanks and lower belly, boldly barred black.

Female lacks red on the head.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Forages at low levels of trees, prefers twigs and branches.

Breeding

Nest in hole of tree. October-March.

Willis and Oniki (¹¹⁹) treat Picumnus temmincki as a subspecies of Picumnus cirrhatus.
