The account
Description
10 cm. Male's forehead and crown are black with broad red feather tips forming a red patch. Nape and hindneck black spotted white. Cheeks and ear coverts buff, barred black. White stripe behind the eye. Side of neck, throat, and moustachial area whitish, barred black. Upperparts brownish-olive with faint barring. Upper wing coverts, primaries and secondaries brown, the secondaries and tertials edged whitish. Upper tail dark brown, the central tail feathers with a white stripe along inner web, the outer two or three tail feathers with diagonal white stripes. Underside white, barred black.
The female lacks red on the head.

How the map was made
The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.
The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Taxonomy notes
Picumnus albosquamatus, tiny, brown, with wedge-shaped marks below is found inland in northern Estado São Paulo in savannah country (128). Picumnus nebulosus, tiny, brownish above with rusty brown breast and flanks heavily marked black, is found from Parana southward.
