The account

Description

28 cm. The long tail is distinctive. Green all over with the exception of a blue patch on the under-belly. Bluish green in flight and tail feathers. Bill and periocular region whitish.

Female and immatures lack the blue on the belly.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Flight calls relatively high pitched 'tli tli tli tlii', 'crikio' (¹¹⁹), song distinctive, thrush like whistled phrases, sung mornings and evenings (vocalization # 2 and 3).

Behavior

Forages in fruit trees in primary or secondary dense rain forest.

Breeding

Nests in a hollow of a large tree. August-February.

Habitat and status

Rare in lower montane and subtropical humid rainforest.

Distribution

In Estado Rio de Janeiro found at Nova Friburgo (1900), Desengano State Park (1986), Macae (1957), Serra de Tingua (1981) (¹²²). In Estado São Paulo found at Sete Barras, Cananeia, Guaratuba, São Sebastiao, Fazenda Intervales (¹¹⁹), PE Jacupiranga (Remold and Ramos Neto, unpubl. data). 300-900 meters.
