The account

Description

32 cm. Shining bright grass green all over. Red on the head extends to the mid crown and around bare orbital skin. Some red spots on ear-coverts and neck. Shoulders to primary coverts red. Lower thighs mixed with red. Primaries with blue tips, tail tipped yellowish.

Voice

Calls in flight a loud 'caw caw caw' (vocalization # 2), 'kee-o kee-o kee-o..' (vocalization # 1).

Behavior

Thought to be associated with Araucaria (¹²⁴), but also found in alder gallery forest. Roosts some times in Eucalyptus and Pinus forest. Forages in canopy of trees, in small groups and pairs.

Breeding

September-December, nest in hole of tree.

Habitat and status

Extralimital. To be expected as a straggler.

Distribution

Confined largely to Rio Grande do Sul but there is an old record from Estado São Paulo near Piracicaba (⁴⁰). 300-1000 meters.
