The account

Description

24-28 cm. Mostly dark green above with a narrow band at the font of the head rufous. Lores black. Ear coverts grayish. Chin and sides of breast yellow-green, the feathers edged brown producing a scaled effect. Belly maroon. Blue primaries. Tail olive green, distal third of the tail maroon, underside of the tail rufous brown. Small underwing coverts red. Large underwing coverts yellow.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Noisy when airborne. Calls a grating 'cri' cri cri. . . .' or 'cricri', loud and obtrusive.

Behavior

Forages in middle canopy of trees, usually in groups.

Breeding

October-December.

Habitat and status

Common in primary and secondary rainforest. Flies over deforested areas.

Distribution

Throughout and widely distributed inland. In Estado Rio de Janeiro found in the Serra dos Orgãos and Serra Mantiqueira. In Estado São Paulo found at Campos do Jordão and in the Serra Bocaina. Most common in montane rainforest, but descends to lower forests. Further south occurs at lower altitudes (Boraceia, Cantareira, Sete Barras, PE Carlos Botelho, Peruibe, PE Jacupiranga, Cananeia, Itararé). To 1200 meters
