24-28 cm. Mostly dark green above with a narrow band at the font of the head rufous. Lores black. Ear coverts grayish. Chin and sides of breast yellow-green, the feathers edged brown producing a scaled effect. Belly maroon. Blue primaries. Tail olive green, distal third of the tail maroon, underside of the tail rufous brown. Small underwing coverts red. Large underwing coverts yellow.
Noisy when airborne. Calls a grating "cri" cri cri. . . ." or "cricri", loud and obtrusive.
Forages in middle canopy of trees, usually in groups.
October-December.
Common in primary and secondary rainforest. Flies over deforested areas.
Throughout and widely distributed inland. In Estado Rio de Janeiro found in the<8E>Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>and<8E>Serra Mantiqueira<8E>. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found at<8E>Campos do Jord<C4>o<8E>and in the<8E>Serra Bocaina. Most common in montane rainforest, but descends to lower forests. Further south occurs at lower altitudes <8E>Boraceia, <8E>Cantareira, <8E>Sete Barras, <8E>PE <8E>Carlos Botelho, <8E>Peruibe, PE <8E>Jacupiranga, <8E>Cananeia, <8E>Itarar<CA> . To 1200 meters
