30 cm. Area around eye to forehead red, changing to orange on the forecrown and to yellow on the midcrown. Head, neck, body and wings deep green. Lower breast to belly red. Lower back and rump with feathers edged red. Tips of the primaries and the whole of the secondaries blue. Underwing coverts orange red. Underside of tail dark reddish-gray. Orbital skin grayish. <NThe immature has less red and yellow on the head. Call "crii crii" or "jea jea" very similar to the common call of /Cyanocitta cristata of eastern North America., also high "creee", "crr crr.." Forages in trees in small groups or as singles. October. Uncommon to rare in dry forest and edge, single trees or tree groups, cerrado, caatinga, gallery forest, gardens. Mostly extralimital away from coastal areas in Estado S<C4>o Paulo, Minas Gerais. Declining due to forest clearance and the bird trade. Maps show a wide distribution in Estado S<C4>o Paulo and Estado Rio de Janeiro reaching the coastal areas, but no recent records from the vicinity of the coast are known ^120 , ^124 .
