Male 22-28 cm, female 22-26 cm. <NTop of head gray. Forehead, sides of head and underparts vinous pink. Line behind the eye and on the ear coverts purple-black. Upper parts olive brown glossed iridescent purple and gold on the upper mantle. Outer tail feathers broadly tipped white or cinnamon rufous. Orbital skin bluish. Iris red. Bill black. Legs and feet red. <NThe female has little or no gray on the top of the head. <NJuveniles have a buffy foreneck and breast and no metallic reflections on the sides of the neck. Call dark "coo whoo". Mostly forages on the ground for seeds, alone or in groups. Breeds inland sometimes in giant colonies in sugar cane fields ^119 . April-June. Not uncommon in open areas inland, cultivated land, farmland and gardens, cities. Rare at the coast. Moves into newly deforested areas. Throughout.
