25.5-26.5 cm. Hindcrown and nape iridescent green or bronze. Forehead, breast and neck dull purple. Sides of the head pale gray. Throat white. Mantle and wing coverts chestnut. Primaries black, the rest of the wings gray. Lower back dark gray. Belly gray. Tail dark gray, the tips paler with an indistinct black band. Iris orange or red. Orbital skin red. Bill and cere black. Legs red. <NThe female is duller, the purplish areas are brown. <NThe juvenile male is like the female, but has rufous edges on the feathers that are purple in the male. <NThe juvenile female has pale edges on most feathers, otherwise is like the adult female. Call "rru", song like "duo, du -du-duo du-du-duo". The "du" notes are short, emphasis is on the drawn out "duo" notes. Forages in the canopy of trees and bushes for fruit. Occurs singly or in flocks. Not uncommon in the edge of humid forest, open swamps, savannah with scattered trees and riverine forest. Throughout. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo found in the coastal area at <8E>Pariquera Acu, Barra do Ribeira, Icapara, Ubatuba, Japi, Itapetininga, Cananeia, Itapeva, Rio Verde, Bananal, S<C4>o Jose do Barreiro, and at many inland locations ^119 : there are old records from<8E>Iguape, Olimpia, Valpariso<8E>.
