Scaled Pigeon

28-34 cm. Most of the head, back, wing coverts, and inner remiges vinous reddish brown. The feathers of the neck and upper mantle with a white subterminal spot and a purple fringe. The feathers of the breast, belly and crissum whitish buff, edged metallic purple giving a scaled appearance. Eyering and bill crimson. Legs purplish red. <NIn the female the vinous reddish brown on the back is replaced with dull brown and the scaly markings are less purplish. <NThe juvenile is dull dark brown with weakly indicated lighter scaling. Call deep "whoo ho-u-o hoo ho-uu-o", sometimes two even lower pitched "hu hu" preceding the call vocalization 3 . Forages in the canopy of trees, among epiphytes and in bushes for fruit: sometimes in flocks. Almost extinct in Estado S<C4>o Paulo ^119 . Occurs on the edge of rain forest and swamp forest with single standing tall trees, and in clearings in forested areas. Throughout.
