How the two place registers relate
The discs recorded their geography in more than one form, and recovering them produced more than one register. This page explains what each is, and why they are not merged.
- Place descriptions
- Descriptive fields about a place: habitat, directions, citations. One record per place.
- The locality register
- The structured entry for the same place: state, country, stored coordinate text, coordinate-recovery status, and the checklist key stored against it.
- Coordinates
- Shown exactly as the discs store them. No coordinate on this site has been converted to a decimal position, plotted, or calibrated. Where a stored coordinate is incomplete or cannot be read as a valid position, that is what the page says.
- Checklists
- The bird lists shipped on the discs, and the places they may belong to.
- Links between a place and a checklist
- Possible, not confirmed. The files suggest a connection between a place and a list, but the connection itself was never recorded. Where the sources actively disagree — one list key used by two places — or where a referenced list has no recovered source, that is shown as such rather than resolved.
- Links between a place and a bird
- Possible, not confirmed, for the same reason. Some list entries resolve to no accepted account at all, or to a bird whose locality cannot be read safely. Those are shown as unresolved, not dropped.
- The work's own maps
- Five preserved base-map images. None has been aligned to modern coordinates, and nothing is plotted on any of them.
