Geography

Added for this website

This section brings together recovered places, coordinates, checklists, and historical maps. Invalid, incomplete, uncertain, or missing geographic information is shown as such and is not silently corrected.

This page orients a reader across the several distinct kinds of recovered geographic material on this site, which are kept as separate record types rather than merged into one:

Historical place descriptions
Recovered narrative/descriptive fields about a place, kept distinct from the structured locality register even where the two correspond. See Places.
Locality records
The structured historical locality register, with raw coordinate text, coordinate-recovery status, and possible checklist/species connections. See Localities.
Raw coordinate records
Coordinate text exactly as recovered from the source, together with its recovery status. No coordinate on this site has been converted to decimal, plotted, or calibrated. See each locality page, and the unresolved geographic evidence page for a consolidated view.
Checklists
Recovered historical checklists, their member rosters, and their possible connection to a locality. See Checklists.
Possible checklist connections
Possible connection — unresolved. The original files suggest that a checklist and a place may be connected, but the connection has not been confirmed, except where the evidence shows the sources disagree (a checklist key reused across more than one locality) or the evidence is not yet understood (no recovered checklist source, or no Places.dat key at all).
Possible species connections
Possible connection — unresolved. A locality's or checklist's connection to a bird is likewise unconfirmed. Some checklist entries do not resolve to any of the accepted 471 species at all, or resolve to a species with no safely decoded locality; these are shown as not yet understood, not silently dropped. See the unresolved geographic evidence page.
Historical map artifacts
Five preserved historical base-map images. None has been aligned with modern coordinates, and no locality or coordinate has been plotted on any of them. See Historical maps.
