How to use this software / errata (source record 15)

Displaying Species Information When you exit from this screen check the X in the top right corner of the screen you will see a listing of Introduction Topics. To display a list of species, select "Species List" from the Species Menu on the Top Menu Bar. To display species information double-click on any entry or, to use the keyboard, press the F7 key and enter the item number of the species from the listing. A page like this will display showing the available information. This is the Species Page. Using the Species Page The Species Page has a Picture Window, a Main Text window and two other text windows, and various buttons that let you display pictures, maps and hear sounds. If you look on this page below you will also see buttons under the headings Picture and Voice. These are put there to show you how the page works. Pictures You will see that the first picture button is lit up. The picture on the left corresponds to that picture and the text that goes with it is displayed below. Use the "Fit" checkbox at the bottom left to either Fit the picture in the available space or show it full size. Notice that at full size you can"t see the whole picture. You can fix this by moving the cursor over to the divider between the Picture window and this window. When you are over the divider a claw will appear and you can grab it with the claw left-click with the mouse and move it to the right to see a larger picture. Once you have moved the divider over you won"t be able to see all this text so you will have to move it back again to go on. The second button is not lit. If you click down on that button you will first see the text that goes with the second picture. You can still move off the button to leave the first picture displaying with the second picture"s text. Only when you up-click on the second button does the second picture appear. Because the picture is available in lifesize view a ruler displays. If the "Fit" checkbox is unchecked you will see the Lifesize-Fullsize button. If the caption on the button reads "Lifesize" then the picture is shown at approximately lifesize and the screen ruler should measure 1 provided you have set the screen dimensions correctly If not, use "Defaults - Species Page - Set page display size or units" to do this . If you click the button it will change to "Fullsize" and the picture will show at its full available size. If you double-click on a point on the picture when the "Fit" button is checked the picture will redisplay in either "Lifesize" or "Fullsize" view, centered on the point you clicked.<N Sounds Two buttons are displayed below for vocalizations. These work in the same way as the picture buttons except that you must actually stop a song from playing before you can start another. The slider shows the progress. You can always see the text associated with another button just by down-clicking on it. There is a second divider between the Picture and Voice text areas so if you can"t read the full text just move the divider over as described above. Other buttons Buttons for Habitat pictures and Maps are also used though not shown here. Buttons only show if information is available. Buttons with a red dot on them display video clips rather than pictures. Map buttons with a green dot display a map based on checklist information. There are Page-up and Page-down buttons labelled with arrows in the bottom left of the screen. Use these to move to the previous or next entry in the list that has information available. In this case click the Page-Down button or press the "Tab" key to get to it then press the "Enter" key to display the second part of "How to use this software". Mc1 12<10>1<10>97. Sunny, 27<91>C. Other Information Apart from species information, additional information is provided in the form of a list of locations many of which have associated checklists, references and author information. You can also configure a few things. To see what is available, without closing this window click the "Restore" box the double boxes next to the X in the top right hand corner to change this window to its original non-maximized size. Page windows normally display at this size. Behind the window you should now see the application window with the listing of introduction topics displayed. Click the application window so that this window disappears behind it. If the application window is maximized, make it smaller so that you can see both windows and observe you can switch from one to the other by clicking on the appropriate window. Locations Select "Places" from the Index Menu on the Top Menu Bar to display a list of locations referenced. Some locations have checklists associated with them but many do not. If you click the AreaMap button on the Places listing you will see a map showing the position of those locations in the list that have associated checklists. However if you left double-click any of the location entries a page like this will display that includes a map with the location position flagged provided it lies within the map boundaries. Double click on the map once it displays to maximize it. Checklists Many locations have an associated checklist. Select "Checklists" from the Index Menu on the Top Menu Bar. The top entry in the list is always the main checklist Brazil and it should be highlighted in color. The checklist selected determines which species will appear in the Species list. To specify a different checklist double-click its entry or press the F7 key and specify an item in the list. References These are used in the text and are for your information. Use the "Defaults - Species Page - Resolve References" option to turn on and off the display of references in the text. Other functions When you have many windows open you can use the Cascade and Close options from the Page Menu on the Top Menu Bar to either cascade them or close them all.<N The various configurable options are listed in the Defaults Menu on the Top Menu Bar. Each one of these is described in the Help file. You can access the Help Index from the Help Menu on the Top Menu Bar. The Random Player is turned on from the File Menu on the Top Menu Bar. After a time interval you define it will randomly display pictures and play vocalizations for all available species.<N<N

When references are expanded "Defaults-Species Page-Resolve References in the text" and a reference in the text has an internet link as its publication name double-clicking on the the expanded reference will cause the Internet page to be retrieved. Results are displayed using whatever is you default Internet Browser. Internet searches. If the option to use Internet Searches is turned on "Defaults-Species Page-Enable Internet Searches" then two options are provided at the end of the available text to perform a Google Image search using either the English or Scientific name of the species. This lets the user determine whether there are any additional pictures of the species available on the Web. Results are displayed using your Internet browser. To perform text searches just click on the Web link on the Google results page after it displays.<N<N Important Installation Information. If you own both Disc2 and Disc3 you must always install them in the order Disc2 followed by Disc3. This is because Disc2 precedes Disc3 by over 4 years so that, whereas Disc3 knows about the contents of Disc2 the reverse is not the case. For instance this page is not available on Disc3 and if you install Disc2 after Disc3 you will no longer be able to access this page or any pictures or vocalizations associated with Disc3. 5Intrv1 . /Furnarius figulus Was observed in 2003 in Rio de Janeiro City, Refugio Chico Mendes, Barra do Ribeira. /Leptasthenura setaria Occurs at Fazenda Intervales and Iporanga. /Anabacerthia amaurotis Vocalization 1 is doubtful. According to Jeremy Minns, S<C4>o Paulo, it has similarities with Heliobletus and also with /Syndactyla rufosuperciliata . Disregard vocalization 3 belonging to /Heliobletus contaminatus . /Thamnophilus caerulescens Vocalization 5 is doubtful and might belong to /Dysithamnus mentalis . /Euscarthmus meloryphus Disregard vocalization 2 and 3 from Peru. They belong to the subspecies fulviceps and differ considerably from the vocalizations of the nominate form melorhyphus in SE Brazil. /Elaenia obscura Disregard vocalization 6 belonging to subspecies obscura from NW Argentina based on the completely different calls.
